Any of the nine shortlisted films could make the cut in Foreign Language Film.

Yes, it is disappointing to note the lack of love for Anthony Dod Mantle's work on Rush. But I think the Academy might like the film and nominate it across several categories, including Cinematography perhaps. BAFTA will also like it, I expect, and perhaps some of the guilds. But ditto your feelings about Emmanuel Lubezki. To the Wonder's cinematography is divine.

Nebraska has been hanging on strong, and I'm with you in seeing a potential Best Director nomination for Alexander Payne. He scored one with the HFPA, which I wasn't expecting. Glad to see his film do so well, after some doubts early in the season. Same for Inside Llewyn Davis.

Oops, I forgot Before Midnight. Yeh, that was dumb. I definitely didn't mean to do that, so I'm gonna change it. Hope you don't mind, since you've already made a comment about it! I'll replace it for Philomena.

That whole Academy response to The Wolf of Wall Street is outrageous. Shame instead on the people who were so offended. What a disgrace. What makes it great ...Got to see Fruitvale Station. What makes it great is the Coogler's deft direction in the last 20 mins.. 1st hr is neatly built up to the unfortunate tragedy. For a first feature, its pretty impressive.. Diaz was as good as Spencer in supporting imo. Its Spencer who gets those 2 key big scenes that you need to attract your work. Agree with your very well-written review. And the need to sentimentalize the dramatic beat and foretelling of the ominous things has become a tradition in every true story adaptation and its no different here. Even Rush had some of it. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7133253745096044838.post-11774881553573922132013-12-28T09:13:18.503+00:002013-12-28T09:13:18.503+00:00If Nebraska could get in all of those categories, ...If Nebraska could get in all of those categories, Payne could certainly push for Greengrass position or even Jonze's. After the incredible division of reception welcoming The Wolf of Wall Street, am divorced of expectations of its chances with Academy. 'Shame on you', tough, tough words. And Coens are in the play too. Shall go with - McQueen, Cuaron, Russell, Coens, Payne, for now.

Still not counting out the David O. Russell's foursome acting noms entirely. Could still happen, never know. Academy are the strongest supporters of his work. American Hustle has a real chance in spoiling anyone's party.

Before Midnight and Blue Jasmine are gonna knock someone out in their respective screenplay category.

It pains me that Dod Mantle's magnificent work on Rush is completely forgotten. If there's someone who deserves more credit other than Bruhl on this film, its Dod Mantle. Its one of the best photography for me, this year. And Deakins, what to say.... Better luck next time, any time. Strangely so, my vote for Lubezki's work would go for To the Wonder. Have some reservations about digital amplification that'd like discuss sometime later. But that said, he already should have had 2 Oscars.

Not confident in The Hunt, brother? The Grandmaster is very un-like Academy to me. But would be delighted if it makes the cut.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7133253745096044838.post-39354544833222789102013-12-24T14:09:31.031+00:002013-12-24T14:09:31.031+00:00Thank-you! Its a fascinating movie. His unorthodox film-making skills are so profound that they help convey so much more than what the structure and edits have to provide to one's eyes. Its unlike any other martial arts flick. The atmosphere of the film is ravishing. And it isn't about the Ip Man, alone. You don't often hear a better actor in a movie starring Tony Leung. And you do here, Zhang Ziyi, and in a real world she'd right up there contesting for best actress.
