The Academy's music branch has skimmed through the list of submitted scores, thrown darts at the page, and thus selected 104 eligible scores for contention. And here they are:

Absent from the list is one score which I have been predicting since I began making predictions this year: Alexandre Desplat's score for Moonrise Kingdom. Never mind, the ever-prolific Desplat has three scores in contention, including work for hot Oscar favourites Argo and Zero Dark Thirty. Danny Elfman appears the most times, five, but not for Silver Linings Playbook, which was deemed ineligible as the soundtrack was too heavily diluted by existing material. This may be why Moonrise Kingdom fell foul (a lot of Benjamin Britten on that soundtrack), although it didn't stop Desplat's score for Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox being nominated three years back, nor Gustavo Santaolalla's two respective scores for Brokeback Mountain and Babel winning consecutively in 2005 and 2006 (Santaolalla's score for On the Road is On the List this year). The Academy's music branch forbids scores from more than one composer, officially, but apparently not always, as eleven such examples appear here. One such example is the score for Cloud Atlas, which was written by three composers, including co-director Tom Tykwer; Tykwer is not listed above, though. Perhaps they balked at a potential threesome. Hans Zimmer's score for The Dark Knight Rises is eligible, although that may change: Zimmer and James Newton Howard's score for The Dark Knight was initially ruled ineligible, then ruled eligible, then not even nominated. Who knows, eh? With the music branch, who the fuck ever knows?
