THE GREAT GATSBY - FIRST REVIEWS SURFACE

Looks like The Great Gatsby has at last been seen, and the responses are, as predicted, mixed. Well, who even cares, all of Baz Luhrmann's films have been greeted with as many jeers as cheers, even his breathtakingly brilliant Moulin Rouge. The thing is, though, this time, the jeers are adopting an 'I-told-you-so' tone, while the cheers are adopting a 'What-did-you-expect?' tone. In other words, it's pretty much exactly what you're expecting it to be. Alas, as a fan of Luhrmann's other films, based on the trailers, I'm expecting it to be an absolute trashy hot mess. Here is a film that could be the year's unequivocal best, or unequivocal worst.

Scott Foundas at Variety (likes it, but hardly unreservedly)

Todd McCarthy at The Hollywood Reporter (the kind of blah review someone would write if they hadn't seen the film; you can glean everything he states from watching the trailer, fs)

Alonso Duralde at The Wrap (unwaveringly unimpressed)

Drew McWeeny at HitFix (disappointed, you can sense his heavy heart, awk)

  1. Being a DiCaprio fan, it doesn't bode well. When your review can be expected for The Great Gatsby and Star Trek into Darkness?
