AUG 2-4 BOX OFFICE REPORT: NOT SO SMURFTASTIC

It was the quietest weekend yet this summer at the domestic box office, with both major new releases disappointing. 2 Guns did manage to topple The Wolverine from atop the B.O. perch, but its $27.1 million was underwhelming considering expectations. The Wolverine thus fell 59.9% to second, with $21.3 million. And The Smurfs 2 could only muster up $17.4 million over the weekend ($27.1 million since Wednesday - only slightly above 2 Guns' three-day start). Whether you look at its three or five-day opening, it earned less than half of its predecessor's starting tally.

The Conjuring continued to hold on terrifically well, dropping just 41.3% to fourth place. And Despicable Me 2 was certainly not fazed by direct competition from The Smurfs 2, falling 38.3% to fifth. The Way, Way Back held onto eleventh spot, and Fruitvale Station posted a discouraging drop of 43.3% despite adding 22 theatres. Most limited releases failed to break out: The Canyons' (58) $13,351 wasn't great, although a bit better when taking into account its multi-platform release (it fared better than Only God Forgives two weeks back). Europa Report (53), The Artist and the Model (56) and Our Children (68) were all weak, but there was one very bright spot: The Spectacular Now (30), whose $49,354 per-theatre average was the highest of the weekend. It was also above distributor A24's The Bling Ring's per-theatre average earlier this summer, and, from four summers back, that of (500) Days of Summer, which shares the same writers.

The Winner / Highest Opener: 2 Guns ($27,059,130)
Top Per-Theatre Average: The Spectacular Now ($49,354)
