The last time I saw a film attain this much buzz this early in the year was Up in the Air. It went on to lose to The Hurt Locker in a battle with Avatar, with Inglourious Basterds and Precious likely just behind, riding its wave to zero Oscar wins. And it starred George Clooney, was directed by the affable Jason Reitman, was a shoo-in for Adapted Screenplay and didn't feature any scenes of slaves being whipped.
