SEP 13-15 BOX OFFICE REPORT: AN INSIDIOUSLY GOOD START

Insidious: Chapter 2 took in $40.3 million at the US box office last weekend. That put it not only in first place for the weekend but also first all-time for distributor FilmDistrict, second all-time for the month of September and fourth all-time for supernatural horror movies. It's also over three times as high as predecessor Insidious' opening. Luc Besson's The Family overperformed with $14 million in second place, but it'll likely fall fast.

It was a strong weekend overall at the box office. Only one major holdover fell hard: Riddick, last weekend's number one, which dropped 64% to third place. Lee Daniels' The Butler (4) crossed $100 million; Instructions Not Included (6) expanded again but did fall to $4.9 million. Limited released were pretty limited, appropriately. Wadjda (50), Mother of George (60) and Blue Caprice (68) all fared OK, but Jayne Mansfield's Car (71) was a massive flop.

The Winner / Highest Opener: Insidious: Chapter 2 ($40,272,103)
Top Per-Theatre Average: Mother of George ($22,500)

Have you been to Box Office Mojo for all the dts yet?
