SEP 6-8 BOX OFFICE REPORT: RIDDICK-ULOUSLY QUIET

Only one major new release at last weekend's domestic box office. David Twohy's Riddick claimed first place with a fair gross of $19 million. That's over twice as much as either of its closest contenders, including Lee Daniels' The Butler (2), the holder for three weeks running, and surprise Hispanic hit Instructions Not Included (3), both of which earned over $8 million. We're the Millers (4) and Planes (5) continued to hang on inside the top five, while last weekend's three-day winner One Direction: This Is Us dropped a predictably humungous 74.4% of its gross down to sixth place.

September's never a busy month at the U.S. box office. Christian film The Ultimate Life (23) opened in moderate release, and flopped with just $.6 million. Not so great either were Adore (39), Winnie Mandela (48), Populaire (62), Hell Baby (82), Fire in the Blood (84), Touchy Feely (87) and Il Futuro (93), among many others. But critically-maligned documentary Salinger (45) fared better, with over $86k in just four theatres. Up top, This Is the End was re-introduced into over 2,000 theatres and took 13th place - it ought to finally tip over $100 million by the time it closes as a result.

The Winner / Highest Opener: Riddick ($19,030,375)
Top Per-Theatre Average: Salinger ($21,739)

Box Office Mojo, natch.

  1. don't worry i'll help out... ;)

"The uncontested most interesting thing about Riddick, the offensively dumb scifi/horror morass from director/writer David Twohy, is an anecdote about its development.

The Hollywood Reporter ran the story this week: series star Vin Diesel had been approached to make a one-scene appearance in the third Fast and the Furious movie, Tokyo Drift. He had left that franchise after the first installment; he turned down a cash offer for the small part, countering that he’d show up only if he was compensated with the rights to the Riddick franchise. No one cared about the future of that property after The Chronicles of Riddick sputtered, so a deal was made."

    ta-da.... ;)

    1. And there you go. I think they've handled the return of this franchise fairly well though.
