TOM AT THE FARM, ANA ARABIA, BERTOLUCCI ON BERTOLUCCI - VENICE REVIEWS

Plenty of reviews from Venice on Xavier Dolan's Tom at the Farm. They've been somewhat mixed, though two separate commentators have noted that it's his strongest work to date. Guy Lodge is most pleased with Gabriel Yared's noir-ish score, and notes the film's technical strengths (alongside Dolan's own physical beauty, natch) in Variety. A review from David Jenkins in Little White Lies is also highly positive about the film. Lee Marshall is on the fence in Screen Daily, and the film receives three stars from John Bleasdale in CineVue. But David Rooney's still not sold on Dolan's self-conscious style of filmmaking, in a negative take in The Hollywood Reporter.

Amos Gitai's one of those directors who doesn't ever seem to stop working, and like some others in the same vein (Hong Sang Soo, Francois Ozon, Brillante Mendoza, Woody Allen), maybe he ought to be a little more selective. So reviews for his latest, Ana Arabia, in The Hollywood Reporter from Boyd van Hoeij and in Variety from Leslie Felperin aren't particularly derisive, but they're not particularly flattering either.

Obviously I'll be seeing Bertolucci on Bertolucci ASAP, as it's about one of my favourite directors, and is directed by Walter Fasano and Luca Guadagnino, whose outstanding I Am Love is one of the best films of recent years. A report on the film from Variety's Jay Weissberg in Venice is complimentary to the documentary, which only makes me more eager to see it!
