The films of Catherine Breillat aren't for everyone, by any means... in fact, some might say they're not for anyone! They don't tend to receive much of a life beyond the festival circuit; such appears to be the case for her latest controversial work, Abuse of Weakness. Beyond the usual quasi-autobiographical narratives familiar from some of Breillat's former films, Abuse of Weakness cuts even closer to the bone, depicting her own experience suffering under the hands of a criminal who gained and betrayed her trust. Reading that a film is divisive is just about as enticing a report as one can receive on a film, and while this is always the case with Catherine Breillat, word is that Abuse of Weakness is among her stronger projects. It's also great to see such a bold, independent female auteur continuing to thrive in the international film industry. Only in France, eh?
