There are precious few films which I have sought out due to their production company. Most, though, have come from Focus Features. Its exceptional CEO, James Schamus, also an Oscar-nominated screenwriter, co-founded the company twelve years ago and has since built it into one of the finest independent film houses in the American film industry. He will be replaced, according to Universal Pictures chairperson Donna Langley, by FilmDistrict's Peter Schlessel. FilmDistrict has been in the ascendancy lately, and will now be merged into Focus Features, as Universal seeks to explore a new route for the company, a less niche route. Yeh, sure, cos Lost in Translation, Brokeback Mountain, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Lust Caution, Eastern Promises, Far from Heaven, A Serious Man, Milk, House of Flying Daggers, 21 Grams, Into the Wild, The Pianist, Moonrise Kingdom, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Atonement are so niche! Well at least we can look forward to some more of the likes of Soul Surfer, Pompeii, Red Dawn, Insidious: Chapter 2, Olympus Has Fallen, Lockout, Parker, The Rum Diary and Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, huh? If you can't tell, I'm livid.
