The Nevada Film Critics Association's benevolent neighbours, the Las Vegas Film Critics Society, bestowed upon 12 Years a Slave five awards earlier in the week. The Nevada lot have given Steve McQueen's film just the one, but it's the big one: Best Picture. Gravity, winning Best Director, Dallas Buyers Club and August: Osage County all take home more awards each, with August winning Meryl Streep her first, and possibly last, Best Actress award of the season. I don't trust any group which sees fit to hand out an award for Visual Effects, though, and not Screenplay.

There's apparently no film other than 12 Years a Slave and Gravity for the top honors. Even Her has, now, neutralized its effect paving way for these 2 split to the major honor. Critics could use little bit of change. So, Jared Leto is sweeping these best supporting awards. When are you seeing Dallas Buyers Club?
ReplyDeleteSeeing Dallas Buyers Club asap, tho I've no idea yet when that'll be! I think a lot of the smaller critic groups are just rallying blindly behind 12 Years a Slave and Gravity, though it's no bad thing that they're doing that, cos they're both such brilliant films. I bet that, among more discerning voters (whether critics or industry voters), Her will get a lot more traction. It surely did with NBR and LAFCA.
