NOV 29 - DEC 1 BOX OFFICE REPORT: BOX OFFICE FROZEN ON CATCHING FIRE

Two major blockbusters, both led by females, drove the weekend to one of the all-time highest three-day grosses overall, though it was slim pickings beneath the Top 2. No surprise to note that The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (1) repeated in first place; its $74.2 million Friday-Sunday was down a fairly steep 53.1% since last weekend's record opening, though strong grosses over the Wednesday-Sunday five-day Thanksgiving weekend, indeed a Thanksgiving record of $110 million, have all but ensured that Catching Fire will exceed $400 million domestically, and its predecessor's final tally. In second, Frozen (2) served, effectively, as a new release, expanding after last week's El Capitan theatre exclusive run into very wide release. With $67.4 million three-day and $93.6 million five-day, this nationwide opening is the biggest ever over Thanksgiving, and significantly ahead of Disney Animation's last princess film, 2010's highly-successful Tangled.

It being Thanksgiving and that, the vast majority of films posted either small drops or even increases, with a number of expansions. Last week's No. 5, Free Birds (14) was the biggest loser, though, facing gigantic competition from Frozen. Several films added theatres and saw their fortunes increase, including The Book Thief (7), Philomena (8) and Nebraska (19), though Dallas Buyers Club (12) fell two places and 6.3% despite adding 30 theatres. Major new releases were all disappointments: Jason Statham thriller Homefront (5) was yet another bomb for the British action star, African-American and Christian-targeted musical Black Nativity (9) largely failed to draw its intended crowds and Spike Lee's Oldboy (18) bottomed out, dumped into moderate release and attracting less than $900k of revenue. Indeed, it was a very slow week for new releases, with only seven in total, including Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (33) and The Punk Singer (46).

The Winner: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($74,179,601)
Highest Opener: Homefront ($6,915,241)
Top Per-Theatre Average: Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom ($21,071)

Box Office Mojo has figures for both three-day and five-day weekend tallies.
