DEC 27-29 BOX OFFICE REPORT: FROZEN BITES BACK

A barrage of new releases still couldn't take out The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (1) from atop the US box office over the final weekend of 2013. A Christmas boost saw top notch takings for most films, though, and box office remained strong enough to beat 2012's total take. A close second to The Hobbit's $29 million was Frozen (2), with $28.6 million, swapping places with last weekend's highest placed newbie, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (3) with $19.7 million, and American Hustle (4) rounded out the same Top 4 as the weekend prior, falling just 2% over the comparative frames.

Five new releases were vying to unseat Peter Jackson's latest from the top spot, though all five underwhelmed. Best was Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street (5), which rode a wave of controversy to a meagre $18.4 million. Strong Christmas Day grosses bolstered its gross, though. And it was much better than The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (7) with just $12.8 million, 47 Ronin (9) with $9.9 million (on a $175 million budget, thereby making it one of the year's biggest flops) and Grudge Match (11) with $7 million. Worth noting that films released over Christmas tend to open small and hold strong, and these slight takings may not spell disaster for all of these films. It definitely does for Believe (14), however, Justin Bieber's new documentary. In just over 1,000 theatres, its $1,936 per-theatre average was the lowest in the entire Top 20. In limited, August: Osage County (31) didn't do too badly at all, with a much healthier per-theatre average: $35,860. Lone Survivor (35) made $45,436 per-theatre though, but ranked lower due to opening in two theatres to August's five. Ralph Fiennes' The Invisible Woman (45) was the loser among limited releases over the weekend.

The Winner: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug ($29,031,732)
Highest Opener: The Wolf of Wall Street ($18,361,578)
Top Per-Theatre Average: Lone Survivor ($45,436)

And if that wasn't enough for you, maybe Box Office Mojo's report will be.
