10 YEARS AT THE MOVIES: BEST MUSIC - NICK ANGEL AND DARIO MARIANELLI (ATONEMENT)

It's one thing, one quite difficult thing, to achieve greatness in art when working with an exciting, innovative, fresh conceptual foundation. It's another thing, even more difficult, to do so when working with rather more standard core elements. Dario Marianelli's score for Atonement is rooted in classic musical techniques, with melodies, harmonies and orchestrations hailing from the past. They're familiar building blocks he must use to construct a work of art worthy of Joe Wright's exquisitely beautiful film. And Marianelli achieves greatness indeed, with a swooning score that ranks as among the finest conventional classical works of recent times. His is the finest film soundtrack of the past ten years, beating an enormous wealth of competition of all styles and genres of music.
