STILL THE WATER INSTILLS LITTLE LOVE IN CANNES CRITICS

One of the more polarising films in the 2014 main competition at Cannes, Kawase Naomi's latest film to show at the festival has nonetheless also wound up being among its worst-received overall. The negative responses seem to outweigh the positive ones. Nevertheless, with some slight crossover between Kawase's style and that of jury president Jane Campion, and the possible pressure on Campion to reward one of only two female directors with the Palme d'Or, don't rule Still the Water out entirely. Here are what the following critics have had to say: Guy Lodge at HitFix, Clarence Tsui at The Hollywood Reporter, Nikola Grozdanovic at The Playlist, Wesley Morris at Grantland, Maggie Lee at Variety, A. A. Dowd at The A. V. Club, Monica Delgado at desistfilm, Peter Bradshaw at The Guardian and Mike D'Angelo at The Dissolve.
