A TIFF bow followed by a US release on the 7th of November (and a UK one on the 2nd of January) is Universal / Working Title's strategy to make The Theory of Everything an awards contender. It doesn't seem like a particularly confident one, for what looks to me to be plain old British awards bait, much like last year's Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. So don't go expecting all that they seem to. James Marsh is best known for documentaries like Man on Wire, which won him an Oscar, and Project Nim; his best film is the drama The King, with Gael Garcia Bernal, and it seems a million miles away from this.
