VENICE REPORT: CYMBELINE

There must be an allure to filmmakers wishing to present their take on Shakespeare to adapt one of his more 'difficult' works - to see if they can expose the brilliance therein, perhaps? To update it, and evaluate its worth in a new era? Either way, critics at Venice seem to wish Michael Almereyda hadn't felt that allure, as reviews for his new film, Cymbeline, are mostly just plain bad. Sample some of them here: Jessica Kiang at The Playlist, David Rooney at The Hollywood Reporter, Derek Malcolm at Evening Standard, Peter Debruge at Variety and Tommaso Tocci at The Film Stage.
