CANNES REPORT - ERGUVEN'S MUSTANG

A French production co-written by Alice Winocour (whose Disorder also showed in Cannes this year, to rather more mixed reviews), Mustang is nevertheless a Turkish story, whose fellow co-writer, Deniz Gamze Erguven, is one of a steadily increasing group of Middle Eastern female filmmakers. Mustang is the latest popular film to screen in Directors' Fortnight this year at Cannes, though some reports raise issues with narrative developments toward the film's end. Still, it's pleasing to read such enthusiastic reviews for a female director at Cannes, after this year's competition titles Mon Roi and Marguerite & Julien, both directed by women, were each panned.
