Years in the making, years in the awaiting, Hou Hsiao Hsien's historical martial arts epic The Assassin has finally premiered, with a competition slot at Cannes. As Cannes enters its final days and the majority of major films have already screened, there's considerably less excitement detectable in the tone of those journalists in attendance, but The Assassin has nevertheless lived up to the high expectations that many had of it. There's certainly no unanimity between these writers, with some claiming that the film rather went over their heads, but the tone of the current reports online is generally full of praise.
