Gus van Sant was never the most consistent of directors, but he's on a fairly convincing run at present - convincing in that it's convincing many critics that his glory days (as patchy as they may ever have been) are long behind him. Returning to Cannes with Sea of Trees, the director is receiving a very cold, boo-filled reception: a number of writers have claimed that Sea of Trees is the very worst of all of his worst films, and all five note many of the same risible details in the film, including each of the reviewers below reciting the exact same line verbatim: "You do not understand my culture". Poor Naomi :(
