The last time Luc Besson delivered a breakout hit to an unsuspecting international audience was over 20 years ago with The Professional; it afforded him the clout to command a box office large enough to follow it up with The Fifth Element. Something similar is happening today, as the success of Lucy two years ago has inspired a similar confidence in Besson's ever-trusting European backers, and he returns with $170-million sci-fi Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, starring Cara Delevingne, Rihanna, Herbie Hancock, and Dane DeHaan with the worst haircut in... history? With those costumes, that premise, this distributor (EuropaCorp), that title and these actors, there's not a hope Valerian makes back even half of that Stateside - The Fifth Element 2 this, alas, is not - but make no mistake: I'm gagging to see this. Released in the British Isles and in North America alike on the 21st of July 2017. Yes, a Summer season spot. They're that bullish.
