What a strange bunch. There's plenty to mull over here, but I won't spend too long on it. Just a few things which caught my eye - how did Brendan Gleeson wrangle a nomination over Michael Fassbender? That's embarrassing. I didn't like The Guard, but even if I had, I can't imagine myself understanding that decision. Carey Mulligan was nominated though, which is good, and I'm very pleased to see Nick Nolte nominated - Warrior created a minor splash upon release, faded away, and threatened to re-emerge just before the season began, only to be shot down once more, but I can't think of any reasonable excuse for the fact that this represents Nolte's first nomination this year. And then there's Alexandre Desplat - unlike in the acting categories, there's no limit to the number of times one can be nominated at the Oscars in the music categories. Could Desplat be in a similar situation then? Unlikely, but San Diego have demonstrated how strong his chances are this year, for no fewer than three scores. And, finally, not a mention of Meryl Streep. I can get my head around everything else, but not quite that. This certainly is a strange bunch.
