Lincoln leads with 13, a record for the BFCA, and that has nothing to do with the additional action and comedy acting categories. Indeed, with the Best Sound category out this year, it has potentially missed out on a 14th nomination! All those extra categories bump up the nomination counts for Jennifer Lawrence (four including Ensemble) and Bradley Cooper (three including Ensemble), but also don't bolster Les Miserables' total, which is at 11, and that doesn't include a screenplay nod. The Master misses out on Director but Life of Pi confirms its status as a frontrunner for Oscar nominations after a wobbly start to the season. Matthew McConaughey makes it in for Magic Mike, and Moonrise Kingdom's ineligible score is one of two for Alexandre Desplat, including Argo and not Zero Dark Thirty, which scores five nominations (it isn't an action movie, then). Skyfall also continues to perform well, scoring two acting nominations. Last year, the BFCA's Best Picture list featured all nine of the Academy's, including Extremely loud and Incredibly Close (which they loved). This year's list looks likely to include all of Oscar's once more, be that nine or not. The awards will be handed out on the telly on the 10th of January.
These results are quite significant as far as the Oscar picture goes. But you and I both know (despite our irrational behavior) that Oscar is a big joke, but a very entertaining one that we follow with enthusiasm every year in spite of outselves. Ha! Thes eresults make it clear that LES MIS is here to stay, and will ultimately compete with LINCOLN and probably ZERO for the top prize. Great to see the wonderful LIFE OF PI in this mix!

The BFCA regularly tries its hardest to guess what AMPAS will pick. That's how they've become so significant. They're a bit shameless like that!
