Not bad reviews for Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring so far, which is competing in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival. It's based on a true story of a group of Hollywood teenagers who burgled the houses of several local celebrities.
One of the most positive reactions comes from Scott Foundas at Variety, a publication that has been impressed by most of the high-profile films shown at Cannes thus far, it seems. Peter Bradshaw at The Guardian calls The Bling Ring 'an unexpected pleasure', although his review is hardly an unexpected rave; ditto for Todd McCarthy at The Hollywood Reporter, who finds the film almost as shallow as its main characters. Eric Kohn's report from IndieWire includes a review of Young & Beautiful as well, which is screening in official competition at the festival; also from IndieWire, Kevin Jagernauth at The Playlist is one of the least-enamoured with Coppola's film, whereas The Telegraph's Robbie Collin feels rather the opposite, arguing that it 'feels every inch a necessary artwork'. Finally, in some agreement with Collin is Awards Daily's Sasha Stone, who thought that the 'great' film was an 'ambitious move for the filmmaker'.
