BOX OFFICE REPORT SEP 20-22: PRISONERS TAKES CAPTIVE

Have you seen Prisoners? Lots of Americans have! It took first place at the US box office over the weekend with a decent $20.8 million. It easily toppled last week's winner Insidious: Chapter 2, which fell 65.7% to $13.8 million. The only other major opener aside from Prisoners was Battle of the Year (5), which took in a pathetic $4.6 million. The dance film likely won't make its $20 million budget back domestically.

Within the entire top 32, the highest per-theatre average belonged to the 3D / IMAX re-release of The Wizard of Oz (9), which came in with $3.1 million - an impressive figure. Gwyneth Paltrow R-rated rom-com Thanks for Sharing (19) was a big disappointment  with just over $500k from 269 theatres. Instructions Not Included (4) climbed both in rankings and in gross, and it could legitimately make it to over $50 million by the end of its run. Lee Daniels' The Butler (7) fell by less than 25%, and We're the Millers (6) by just over 15%! Another strong holdover was Despicable Me 2 (13), climbing 6.1% in its twelfth weekend despite losing theatres. It has yet to fall under $1 million for any weekend thus far, nor under 1,000 theatres. Enough Said (33), starring the late James Gandolfini, pulled in an impressive $58,200 per theatre, easily the highest of writer-director Nicole Holofcener's career to date, and also easily higher than that of Rush's (38) $37,528 - it ranked lower in the charts in more screens too. A Single Shot (85) made a showing, unwisely, what with its small-screen release, and Stephen Dorff-starring Zaytoun (99) might look like an enormous dud, but it at least took in more per-theatre than Thanks for Sharing. Heck, even The Family (3) did.

The Winner / Highest Opener: Prisoners ($20,817,053)
Top Per-Theatre Average: Enough Said ($58,200)
