BFI LFF PREVIEW: BORGMAN

Alex Van Warmerdam's black comedic satire Borgman is one of the most intriguing high-profile selections at the BFI London Film Festival this month, and I'm quite excited to see it. Although reviews for Van Warmerdam's breakthrough feature have been mixed, there was plenty of praise when it screened at Cannes; it didn't win any awards, mind. Vagrant Camiel Borgman invades, along with a band of cohorts, the house of a bourgeois Dutch family and causes chaos within those four walls. Commenters weren't entirely certain on the allegorical meaning of the film, but that's catnip for an inquisitive viewer such as myself. Since Cannes, there have been plenty of festival appearances, and a few awards since then, for the film, and it's in the middle of a gradual rollout in Europe.
