NEBRASKA AND OUT OF THE FURNACE ANNOUNCED AS AFI FEST CENTREPIECE GALAS

Now that previous AFI Fest gala Foxcatcher has been officially delayed until 2014, the AFI has announced two films to take its place. One is Scott Cooper's Out of the Furnace, starring Christian Bale and Casey Affleck. The other is Alexander Payne's Nebraska, which will be accompanied by a Bruce Dern tribute. The road to a second Oscar nomination for Dern, whether in leading or supporting, grows ever clearer as the year progresses. It was previously announced that Saving Mr. Banks would open the fest and that Inside Llewyn Davis would close it.

  1. Agreed. Bruce Dern's chances of getting a nomination are increasing steadily. Academy loves Payne especially his screenplays. But for the first time, as we know, he didn't write the screenplay. And early word isn't stellar which is foremost impetus for surviving in Oscar season. Even if it manages to be a consensual crowd pleaser, its gonna face heavy challenge in screenplay and direction categories. So, Bruce Dern is safe bet in lead, safer in supporting.

Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was a definite fun time but lacked the punch that made LOTR great.
