It might seem like an odd choice, picking a documentary as having my favourite screenplay of 2013. But Rithy Panh's The Missing Picture (which wasn't far ahead of another doc, Claude Lanzmann's The Last of the Unjust in this race) isn't like most documentaries - indeed, it almost isn't even a documentary at all. Panh's writing and Christophe Bataille's poetic narration made this one of the most harrowing films of the year, and together qualify as surely among the finest of writing for the screen.
