BAFTAS SPLIT BETWEEN 12 YEARS AND GRAVITY

After losing expected wins in categories such as Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay, it looked unlikely that 12 Years a Slave might be capable of winning BAFTA's top award for Best Film. But, like at the Critics Choice awards (where it won three) and the Golden Globe awards (where it won just one), Steve McQueen's third film won that very award tonight, alongside just one more, for Chiwetel Ejiofor in Leading Actor. He wasn't facing up against Oscar frontrunner Matthew McConaughey here, though, but this is Ejiofor's first major award win of the season. Like the other bigger institutions this award season, the Best Director award went to Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity, which won six awards in total; its Best British Film win sparked some controversy online. It looked like a more likely Best Film winner than 12 Years after not very long, actually. As did American Hustle, which bit back after a disappointing run with award groups over the past few weeks with three significant wins.
