Universal took a late-year limited release followed by a very lucrative January expansion route with Mark Wahlberg film Lone Survivor last year, a ploy which proved more successful with general audiences than with awards voters. Paramount will try a similar strategy this coming awards season with The Gambler, a remake of James Toback's '70s thriller starring James Caan, again with Mark Wahlberg in the lead. It'll mark a risky December for the studio, as they're pursuing a similar route with Ava DuVernay's Selma. The Gambler also stars Brie Larson and Jessica Lange.
