The films of Philippe Garrel may be an unknown quantity to the vast majority of moviegoers around the world, but his films remain as popular as ever at the world's biggest film festivals. In the Shadow of Women, the veteran filmmaker's latest, booked a slot at Cannes in the Directors' Fortnight selection, serving as that programme's opening film. Although the critical reception has, on the whole, failed to live up to the highest standards that Garrel's canon has set for himself, most critics express largely positive feelings toward the relationship drama.
