BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH IN NEW THE IMITATION GAME POSTER

Far from The Weinstein Company's similar Oscar favourite The King's Speech, the poster for their TIFF People's Choice award winner The Imitation Game recalls that film's main Oscar competition, The Social Network. Whereas this poster format felt fresh and relatively original then, however, this feels a little tired, though it ought to appeal to the film's demographic, which is also pretty tired... Out on the 14th of November in the UK and Ireland and on the 21st in the US.

NEW INTERSTELLAR BANNER POSTER

This isn't the first post I've made about posters for Interstellar. It's not the second either. It's not even the third. That's what you call anticipation.

JENNIFER CONNELLY AND ANTHONY MACKIE IN SHELTER POSTER

Paul Bettany's Shelter has suffered the unfortunate combination of being a tricky proposition from a debut director whose career as an actor never quite took off and of being not very good, according to critics at TIFF. Thus, the film doesn't even have anyone actively handling sales, never mind any international distribution. Still, someone's cooked up an attractive poster for the homelessness drama, starring Bettany's spouse Jennifer Connelly and Anthony Mackie.

BANNER FOR FROM WHAT IS BEFORE

Oh indeed! I bet the last film you were expecting to see a banner poster for was Lav Diaz's From What Is Before. Well, here it is, and it's an impressively stylish one for the award-winning festival hit.

KRISTEN STEWART IN CAMP X-RAY - POSTER

Camp X-Ray is the vaguely controversial Guantanamo Bay drama starring Kristen Stewart that first caught the attention of the press at Sundance in January. It's released in the US on the 17th of October. Here's the poster.

LISTEN UP PHILIP - POSTER

Alex Ross Perry's Listen Up Philip is released in the US on the 17th of October. Despite not winning any awards when it screened at Sundance, the acclaimed drama, starring Jason Schwartzman, springboarded from that premiere to a handful of other successful festival appearances through the year, including NYFF, LFF and an award-winning slot at Locarno.

BIRDMAN LOOMS LARGE IN NEW POSTER

It's my humble but correct opinion that they ought to drop the pretentious suffix from Birdman's title. Anyway, it probably won't hurt the awards chances of this well-reviewed dark comedy from Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, which is released in the US on the 17th of October and in the UK on the 2nd of January.

POSTER FOR SERENA

About to receive a (quiet) world premiere at LFF before an awards a BAFTA-qualifying run, Susanne Bier's much-delayed and reportedly poor period romance Serena has a poster. And there it is.

GORGEOUS NEW INTERSTELLAR POSTERS

I was already sold on Interstellar before I saw these posters. Heck, there were enough posters and trailers already to sell the film to the entire fucking universe, but these three have proper done it for me. Not every day that a poster can stoke one's interest in a film, but how about three of them? That'll do the trick. Out on the 7th of November in the US and the UK.

DECEPTIVE GONE GIRL POSTERS

So Gone Girl's supposed to be rly gd, I hear. But y'all didn't need me to tell you that. Did you even need the critics to? No, y'all knew it, just like I did. Out like rly rly soon like everywhere. A couple of posters before the jump, and a couple after!

INTO THE WOODS - FIRST POSTER

Be careful what you wish for, Disney. Another Nine and it'll flop. But no, it's Stephen Sondheim! Another Sweeney Todd and it won't catch on with the intended audience. But no, it's PG! Another Chicago? That'd be peachy. That PG rating and those rumours, however, will continue to be a concern to many until the film is actually seen; get ready for an awards-season, holiday-season release date, America, on Christmas Day itself! UK, you'll have to wait until the 9th of January. Until then, this, and the trailer, is all you're getting!

JENNIFER ANISTON IN CAKE - POSTER

Cake is a major part of Jennifer Aniston's current career strategy of not straying too far from her comfort zone whilst making The Good Girl-style attempts at impressing more discerning moviegoers. Though the film wasn't met with tremendous praise at TIFF recently, her performance was noted as being among her very best. No distributors picked the film up there, it seems, so we won't likely be looking at a 2014 release.

A BUNCH OF POSTERS FOR JOHN WOO'S THE CROSSING

The mid-20th Century setting, the presence of Zhang Ziyi in a leading role and the fact that Chinese megastar director John Woo is at the helm might bring back memories of last year's The Grandmaster for some. But don't be so narrow-minded, The Crossing is a sober, if sumptuous, drama about Chinese citizens who flee to Taiwan during the Chinese Revolution after WWII. It may be a presence at next year's Oscars, with a Chinese release date set for the 2nd of December and some serious international potential, should a faithful distributor get behind it. MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY IN NEW INTERSTELLAR POSTER

The world awaits the impending release of Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, undeterred by the fact that The Dark Knight Rises wasn't all it had been hyped up to be, instead still buoyant off the high that Inception left us on. I'm the first to admit it: I'm a Christopher Nolan fanboy. There it is, on the Internet, just waiting to be screenprinted. Apparently appreciative of the enormous buzz around this film, distributors worldwide (principally Warner Bros., with Paramount handling the US leg) have scheduled this for release almost globally between the 5th and the 7th of November; this includes both the British Isles and North America on the 7th.

POSTER FOR ESCOBAR: PARADISE LOST

Escobar: Paradise Lost received some poor reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival lately, but that might not hurt the film's eventual commercial performance too much. A thriller about Pablo Escobar, starring Benicio del Toro and Josh Hutcherson? It certainly has potential, and del Toro is said to be a standout. It's released in the US on the 26th of November.

POSTER FOR LIV ULLMANN'S MISS JULIE

Yeh, I was pretty bummed to read some of the lukewarm reactions to Liv Ullmann's highly-anticipated return to directing, Miss Julie, from TIFF recently. The film stars excellent actors like Jessica Chastain and Samantha Morton, is shot by Mikhail Krichman and is even set (and was filmed) in lovely Fermanagh. And then, ofc, there's Ms. Ullmann herself. I'm not expecting an awards run for the film this year, alas. 

JLAW GOES FULL(-LENGTH) FRONTAL(-SHOT) IN NEW MOCKINGJAY PART 1 POSTER

There she is! Sprouting wings and clad in black, JLaw prepares to fight in this dramatic The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 poster, following on from showing us a rather different angle in the last one. The film is released just about everywhere in the universe around the end of November. Expect an exponentially larger male contingent within the audience this year.

THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY - POSTER

Stylish poster for Peter Strickland's The Duke of Burgundy, which recently premiered at TIFF 2014 to much acclaim. It's got a couple more festival appearances on the schedule for the remainder of the year, but don't expect an awards run for the erotic drama. I, however, am wholly looking forward to seeing it next month at LFF.

Benoit Jacquot's 3 Hearts recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Here's a poster for the relationship drama, which stars Benoit Poelvoorde, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Chiara Mastroianni.
