SAG AWARDS: HIDDEN FIGURES WINS ENSEMBLE CAST!

You didn't see this coming, did you? With La La Land out of the way, the Ensemble award from the Screen Actors Guild was perceived by most to be a race between almost any of the nominees, though few predicted Hidden Figures, not least with its lack of wins in the individual categories. Alas, this likely only strengthens La La Land's Oscar potential, given that its closest rival, Moonlight, continues to lose the big guild awards. A largely predictable SAG ceremony was closed out by two big shockers, in the Ensemble Cast choice and in a surprise pick for Lead Actor  - Denzel Washington in Fences, winning alongside his costar Viola Davis. 2016 SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS - NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED

Good news for Hidden Figures, Florence Foster Jenkins and, of all films, Captain Fantastic in the nominations for the 2016 Screen Actors Guild awards. Nothing quite on the level of last year's slew of shockers, so expect SAG-AFTRA's picks to match more closely with the Academy's, but still a few mild head-scratchers here. Catch the awards ceremony on the 29th of January, live on TNT in the US.

DIVERSITY DOMINATES AT SAG AWARDS; SPOTLIGHT WINS ENSEMBLE CAST

We have ourselves an Oscar race! The feeling that The Big Short could have the Best Picture category locked down after its PGA award a week ago was upset tonight by closest rival Spotlight's Ensemble Cast prize at the Screen Actors Guild awards. SAG rarely gives this award to a film that doesn't win one of its four individual acting categories, but this was far from the biggest surprise of the evening: Idris Elba's Supporting Actor win for Beasts of No Nation (one of two for Elba, including a TV award for Luther) makes him the first person in history to win a SAG award for film without a corresponding Oscar nomination. Pair that with the fact that only one TV award for which no POC were nominated went to a white person, and you have quite the statement to the Academy... SCREEN ACTORS GUILD NOMINATIONS

Did you call it? The Screen Actors Guild's nominating committee didn't so much as pull the rug out from under our perceptions of awards season 2015-16 as redecorate the entire room with their slate of nominees. Big contenders such as The Martian and Creed were snubbed entirely, with frontrunners like Sylvester Stallone absent. Favourites with critics such as Charlotte Rampling in 45 Years, Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road and Kristen Stewart in Clouds of Sils Maria failed to appear. Indie films fared very well, with Beasts of No Nation picking up two major nods and nominees Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back and Michael Shannon in 99 Homes making big surprises in their respective categories. And Trumbo was a hit with voters, picking up three nominations; one for Helen Mirren, who pulls off yet another shocker by scoring a second unexpected mention for Woman in Gold. A list full of left-field names that's perhaps more notable for those who didn't make it (Tom Hardy, Paul Dano, Jennifer Jason Leigh) than those who did, and that's as likely to inspire elation as devastation!
