CRITICS WAKE UP TO NURI BILGE CEYLAN'S WINTER SLEEP AT CANNES

Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Winter Sleep was one of the pre-Cannes favourites to win the Palme d'Or. Critics' largely positive though somewhat muted response to his latest film, which is described by several as being both very long and very dense, might hurt its prospects. It's worth noting, though, that if the jury is going to pick a surprise choice for its top award, it's likely to be a challenging film like this. You can read reviews from Deborah Young in The Hollywood Reporter, Xan Brooks in The Guardian, John Bleasdale in Cine-Vue and Jessica Kiang in The Playlist.
