American blockbusters at Cannes may make for an anomalous presence among the variety of independent, international features, but Pixar's Inside Out today made a compelling critical case for their inclusion in the festival. The film, which is directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Ronaldo del Carmen, has attracted the best reviews from the popular animation studio at least since 2010's Toy Story 3. It's not screening in any particular strand of Cannes, and thus won't be eligible for any awards, but is bringing in a lot of very deserved attention, and will likely be a candidate for major American awards later in the year.
