Shocked I missed these when they were announced a full week ago! Beasts of the Southern Wild dominates, racking up seven nominations in total. Unlike last year, then, Chlotrudis look unlikely to match up with Oscar. Nevertheless, I can't help but feel somewhat disappointed by their slate this year, with many of my favourites (The Turin Horse, Amour, Keep the Lights On, The Hunt) passed up entirely, and others snubbed in several categories (Holy Motors, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia). The Chlotrudis Society allows its members to cast votes for films which didn't receive much love last year the following year, so perhaps there's still hope for some of those absentees, particularly The Hunt, which hasn't yet been released in America. Rust and Bone and Bullhead also show up in a number of categories, and Matthias Schoenaerts garners two separate nominations, and how deserved they are. Winners will be announced on the 17th of March.
Hey Paddy, thanks for posting our nominations! I thought I'd take a moment and answer a couple of your questions. A couple of your favorites (most notably weren't eligible this year. AMOUR was pushed to 2014 consideration because since we rely on our committee seeing many of the films in the theatre, and AMOUR wasn't released beyond NYC and LA until a couple of weeks into January, there wasn't enough time for people to see it before nominations time. (You can see that with this year's nomiene, TYRANNOSAUR, which was actually released in 2012.
ReplyDeleteYou're other favorite THE HUNT was not eligible because it hasn't yet received theatrical release. Festival release isn't good enough for Chlotrudis - again, because many of our members rely on theatrical release to see a film. So eligibility is any film released theatrically in the U.S. during the calendar year.
Hope that helps! A few of our members saw THE HUNT in Toronto and loved it, so hopefully it will get a U.S. release this year!
Michael C.
President, Chlotrudis Society for Indepedent Film
Thanks!
