LA LA LAND LOSES TO ARRIVAL IN IFMCA'S 2016 AWARDS

Refrained from posting these nominations when they were announced for various reasons, but none of those reasons apply now that the International Film Music Critics Association has revealed its award winners for 2016. Although La La Land, heavily favoured to win both music Oscars tonight, wins three awards, the most of any film or composer, it's Johann Johannsson's Oscar-disqualified score for Arrival that wins the top award, and deservedly so! SPIRIT AWARDS 2016: MOONLIGHT SWEEPS THE DAY

Good for you, Film Independent. Just pretty good pretty much all around. Moonlight wins six Spirit Awards, amounting to every last one of its nominations, leaving precious little room for its competitors to garner anything - only one other, Manchester by the Sea, sneaks in anywhere. ELLE WINS TOP HONOURS AT 42ND ANNUAL CESAR AWARDS

Elle wins Best Picture and Actress at the Cesar Awards, by some margin or another a better choice than the American Academy is due to make tomorrow night. That's the lot for Paul Verhoeven's controversial comedy-drama, however, as Cesar voters also choose to spread the wealth, much to my satisfaction. We'll just have to overlook the win for Xavier Dolan in Best Director... and Best Editing, however. Check out the Cesar nominations here as well.

MOONLIGHT AND ARRIVAL TAKE WGA HONOURS

Sorry, Lion! Alas, Luke Davies' script wasn't eligible for the Writers Guild of America awards, and also I'm totally not sorry. But a tremendous coup for Moonlight, as its standing in the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race only improves with a win in Original Screenplay with the WGA. Indeed, with yet another contender to fend off this weekend in the Adapted victor here, Arrival, Barry Jenkins' groundbreaking drama nevertheless becomes an even stronger candidate by beating presumed frontrunners La La Land and Manchester by the Sea.
