Film Editing is a significant aspect of film-making. And sometimes, it may very well be the decider of film's quality & the outcome. But how can one attribute the success of films- The Descendants, The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook to the decent editing of the straightforward, simple narrative of their smartly adapted screenplays? Editing of these films doesn't transcribe into a better film and doesn't make 'em different. They owe their success to solid acting and fair direction. And yet all the 3 films got best editing nominations by AMPAS in last 3 years. Now, movies like Inception,Cloud Atlas, Drive & Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy are the ones in which a viewer can notice the impact of editing which influences heavily on his opinion and make 'em different. And it is these movies where the editing category should be recognized at. And yet, none of the 4 films scored a nod from inscrutable AMPAS.
ReplyDeleteIts disappointing as the editing transcends these movies into a new perspective level, irrespective of the film's ultimate opinion.Worthy & deserving Editing should be recognized even if they are divisive and not-oscar friendly and they shouldn't represent as the necessary additional booster to the best picture chances.
Still counting on Zero Dark Thirty to deservedly win this category at the least.
40hrs of seal-team-raid action footage shot at night to thoroughly edit and accomodate in last 30 minutes to account for best piece of film-making on screen is itself a great thing and not to forget the compelling procedural editing leading to it.
