MUTED REACTION AT CANNES TO JAMES FRANCO'S AS I LAY DYING

James Franco managed to refrain from fellating any objects of any kind in his new film, As I Lay Dying, but the critics still haven't been able to get on board with the ambitious adaptation of William Faulkner's novel.

At Variety, 'stodgily faithful to the book' writes Leslie Felperin, but he does praise the film's score, by Timothy O'Keefe. Certainly no kinder to Franco is Geoffrey MacNab at The Independent, criticising the film's 'acute self-consciousness'. It merits a C grade from IndieWire's Kevin Jagernauth, who considers it just another experiment in Franco's career, but Peter Bradshaw considers it a 'qualified but distinct success' in The Guardian. On Twitter, Craig Kennedy expresses a middling opinion.
