A hugely impressive start for horror film The Purge, which used its original premise and Insidious and Sinister tie-ins to deliver a fantastic opening weekend of $34.1 million. That's a new record for an original horror movie, and is also over ten times the film's budget. Opening with just over half that, despite boasting a budget almost 20 times The Purge's is Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson's first pairing since their 2005 hit Wedding Crashers. Its $17.3 million is a paltry start for the poorly-received film.
Similarly mixed results for last week's big openers Now You See Me and After Earth: Now You See Me fell just 35.1% to third, while After Earth plummeted 61.1% to seventh, sealing its fate as the first big bomb of Summer 2013. Expansions proved successful for several films: Frances Ha (14), Before Midnight (15), The East (19), The Kings of Summer (20) and Love Is All You Need (21) all gained on last weekend's grosses as a result. In limited release, Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing (24) was the most successful by far, with some notable disappointments further down the chart - Wish You Were Here could only claim 47th spot, Oscar-winning screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher's (Precious) directorial debut Violet & daisy (56) made only the smallest of splashes, while the latest film from one of the greatest living directors, Alain Resnais' You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet (64) failed to turn Cannes buzz from last year into arthouse buzz in the US.
The Winner / Highest Opener: The Purge ($34,058,360)
Top Per-Theatre Average: Much Ado About Nothing ($34,388)
