It took until 1,000 years after humankind left planet Earth, but Will Smith's star has finally shattered. After Earth, the latest example of what happens when you give M. Night Shyamalan a decent budget, has bombed at the domestic box office, debuting in third place with a dismal $27.5 million haul. What's not surprising is that holdover Fast & Furious 6 beat it, claiming first place with $35.2 million despite a hefty 63.9% decline. What is surprising is that magician comedy-thriller Now You See Me also beat it, though only just, claiming second with $29.3 million.
Varying degrees of success for other openers and expansions. Bollywood film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani cracked the top ten, a rarity for Indian film, with $1.6 million in ninth place. Frances Ha's moderate expansion didn't help it gain grosses, but it did climb a place on the chart, up to 12th, while expansions for last weekend's success story Before Midnight and What Maisie Knew had a somewhat greater effect on those films' attendances. Fair openings for The East (30) and The Kings of Summer (35), each in four theatres, but not so good for Shadow Dancer (56). The best limited performance came from Hannah Arendt (42), which took in $31,270 in just one theatre. Up top, none of the holdovers performed well, with all major releases dropping over 50% weekend-on-weekend. Even The Hangover Part III, whose opening gross last week was roundly terrible, fell over 60%.
The Winner: Fast & Furious 6 ($35,164,440)
Highest Opener: Now You See Me ($29,254,674)
Top Per-Theatre Average: Hannah Arendt ($31,270)
