Idris Elba is very, very good at playing himself. Is he going to be as good at playing Nelson Mandela? He's got the voice down, but the characterisation? I was actually more impressed with (what little we saw of) Naomie Harris in this trailer than Elba. I'll afford this film a little optimism for the time being, but this still strikes me as second-rate Oscar bait.
This trailer, to me, played better than Daniels' The Butler trailer. Good, if not great.
ReplyDeleteAnd this year, 4 potential black actors are up for Best actor. Ejiofor, Jordan, Whitaker and Elba. By the looks of trailer, would put my money on Ejiofor as of now. Any thoughts?
Jordan and Ejiofor stand the best chances. Particularly Michael Jordan. I'm not feeling this whole project though, so I doubt that Idris Elba will make it in.
DeleteFair. It would be great if someone not-as-mainstream as Michael B. Jordan gets in. Wallace may finally Rip.
DeleteOh, my.. Only God Forgives now stands at incredulous 33% in RT and 37 at Metacritic. And top critics of RT have it at egregious 8%. That's way too negative for a divided reception. A nosedive from Drive for Refn. Disappointing.
ReplyDeleteMakes me all the more excited to see it! :D
