JUL 12-14 BOX OFFICE REPORT - GROW UP, AMERICA!

Neither major new release could unseat Despicable Me 2 from atop the US box office this weekend. Falling 47.4% from last week's opening, it narrowly beat another family sequel, Grown Ups 2, and expensive sci-fi Pacific Rim. After strong late-night openings on Thursday, Pacific Rim couldn't draw the kind of large crowds its budget (close to $200 million) demanded. With $37.3 million, it fell short of the critically-reviled Grown Ups 2, which beat its predecessor's $40.5 million opening by $1 million.

The biggest success at the box office was Fruitvale Station, whose 19th place start in just seven theatres brought in $55,184 per-theatre, the highest of any film over the weekend. Expanding into a less limited release, The Way, Way Back held 13th place. The Hunt (44) deserved much better than it received; V/H/S 2 (59) perhaps didn't, although Rex Reed will no doubt be pleased with its $828 per-theatre average haul. Up top, a light drop for The Heat indicates the film's popularity among audiences, while after a bad start last weekend, The Lone Ranger had an even worse second weekend, taking in $11.5 million in fifth place.

The Winner: Despicable Me 2 ($43,892,895)
Highest Opener: Grown Ups 2 ($41,508,572)
Top Per-Theatre Average: Fruitvale Station ($55,184)
