JUL 5-7 BOX OFFICE REPORT: DESPICABLE ALL AROUND

Despicable Me 2's start was far from despicable over both three and five-day weekend frames, while Disney's attempt at starting a Pirates of the Caribbean for the new decade with The Lone Ranger was just that: despicable, as predicted. With $83.5 million over the weekend and $143.1 million since Wednesday, Despicable Me 2 has far outdone the impressive figures posted by the first Despicable Me, and now looks likely to overtake Monsters University's grosses by the two respective movies' closes. The Lone Ranger, on a budget of approximately $215 million took in just $29.2 million Friday-Sunday, $48.7 million Wednesday-Sunday. It probably won't make back half its budget domestically. In eighth place, stand-up comedy film Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain made $10 million / $17.4 million, superb amounts for a stand-up film, and it's well on its way to becoming the highest grossing film of all time in that genre.

Against direct competition from Despicable Me 2, Monsters University took a tumble, landing in fourth with a 56.8% drop. The Heat held on much better, in third with just a 36.7% drop. Continuing to hang on well are World War Z and This Is the End; not so much White House Down and Man of Steel. The most notable limited opening was The Way, Way Back (13), with its $29,094 per-theatre average in 19 theatres. Stuck in Love (43) and The Look of Love (63) both disappointed.

The Winner / Highest Opener: Despicable Me 2 ($83,517,315)
Top Per-Theatre Average: The Way, Way Back ($29,094)

Now where do you think you can find all the details? Duh! Box Office Mojo!

    1. It's the weekend's biggest success story, without a doubt. In fact, it's one of the year's biggest success stories at the box office.
