JUN 28-30 BOX OFFICE REPORT - THE HEAT HOTS UP, WHITE HOUSE TAKEN DOWN

Two high profile new releases at the US box office last weekend, but neither were strong enough to topple Monsters University, which retained its lead. Monsters' $45.6 million is down 44.7% from last week, which is a fairly decent decline, and its $170.4 million haul to date is pretty darn good. Sandra Bullock / Melissa McCarthy comedy The Heat took second place with $39.1 million, which is significantly higher than Paul Feig's last comedy hit, Bridesmaids' $26.2 million. Opening weakly in fourth place was White House Down - to put it one way, Roland Emmerich's would-be blockbuster scored a lower per-theatre average than World War Z in its second weekend and in more theatres, after a 55.2% weekend-on-weekend drop.

Yet again, light drops for This Is the End (-34.5%) and Now You See Me (-28.7%), and steep ones for The Internship (-57.9%) and After Earth (-65.6%). Plenty of limited releases, but none were particularly strong. Pedro Almodovar's I'm So Excited (33) cooked up $19,466 per theatre, which wasn't excellent but was certainly better than Jason Statham film Redemption (52) and Byzantium (56).

The Winner: Monsters University ($45,607,745)
Highest Opener: The Heat ($$39,115,043)
Top Per-Theatre Average: I'm So Excited ($19,466)
