First World War Z, then The Lone Ranger, and now Despicable Me 2. It may not always be clear why select American films are refused release in the People's Republic, but whatever the case may be, Universal's Despicable Me 2, which has been an enormous cash cow for the studio throughout the rest of the world (I don't think there'll end up being a single territory where it doesn't notably outgross its predecessor) is one such film. I expect that the Chinese government is simply keen to limit the amount of yuan spent on non-Chinese product at the cinema, and goodness knows Despicable Me 2 would have banked quite a bit, much like The Croods did earlier this year before it was pulled from Chinese cinemas after just two weeks of release. Now, the question is, will it get a release in North Korea...
