NOV 1-3 BOX OFFICE REPORT - ENDER'S GAME ENDS FREE BIRDS

There were three major new releases at the US box office over the weekend, and all three ended up in the Top 4. Ender's Game (1) fared strongest, with $27 million, enough to knock Bad Grandpa (2) off the top spot, though its 37.6% drop from last weekend was comfortably the smallest for the Jackass franchise. Last Vegas (3) might hold up best in the long run, and it took in $16.3 million, not far ahead of Free Birds (4). Relativity Media's first animated feature may have been the first animation to be given a wide release in over a month, but its $15.8 million three-day haul was very poor. Gravity (5) saw its steepest drop weekend-on-weekend yet, while Captain Phillips (6) saw its slightest; both will easily cross $250 and $100 million, respectively, in coming weeks.

Further expansions for 12 Years a Slave (7) and All Is Lost (15) increased both the takings and the chart positions of the two critically acclaimed films, with 12 Years a Slave once again posting particularly good numbers. About Time (13) and Krrish 3 (14) had modest openings in moderate release, but Diana (38) and Mr. Nobody (95) were far from modest - they were just pretty disastrous. And goodness only knows why Man of Tai Chi (40), Big Sur (55), Sal (72) and A Perfect Man (103) were even released theatrically, as all four made precious little cash after VOD releases. On a more positive note, Dallas Buyers Club (22) made the most money per-theatre of any film on release over the weekend. And Despicable Me 2 (16) continued its extraordinary run: still not out of the Top 20, still not under $1,000 per-theatre, and climbing 4 chart places and 8.4% of last weekend's gross, despite losing 70 theatres since then.

The Winner / Highest Opener: Ender's Game ($27,017,351)
Top Per-Theatre Average: Dallas Buyers Club ($28,985)
