DEC 6-8 BOX OFFICE REPORT: FURNACE FROZEN OUT

With its family demographic helping it hold stronger than Catching Fire (2), Frozen (1) pulled in the highest box office over the weekend in the US. $31.6 million bested The Hunger Games: Catching Fire's $26.2 million, as both head for high final grosses. Over the slow post-Thanksgiving weekend, all holdovers in the Top 20 lost money, with many bleeding cash, even those two popular box office leaders. Out of the Furnace (3) opened with $5.2 million, rather far behind, and rather disappointingly too, and its $2,485 per-theatre average was notably lower than either Frozen's or Catching Fire's.

Over a slow weekend in most theatres across America, four performed extremely well: the four screening Inside Llewyn Davis (19). Its $405,411 gross makes $101,353 - the 18th highest of all time, and the 8th highest live-action. No wonder it did so well, being a Coen brothers feature, and showing in two New York theatres (what with its iconic Greenwich Village setting), though this is particularly impressive when one looks back over the Coens' history of limited releases, which have never been even nearly this good. A few films near the top of the box office added screens, though none added money: Nebraska (16) fared best with just a 28.7% drop, though The Book Thief (7) and Philomena (9) did decently enough. Black Nativity (14), though, utterly plummeted, despite an increase in availability. Beneath Inside Llewyn Davis, limited releases were, well, limited: Twice Born (52), The Last Days on Mars (64) and Paradise: Hope (70) all failed to make much of an impact.

The Winner: Frozen ($31,616,230)
Highest Opener: Out of the Furnace ($5,220,288)
Top Per-Theatre Average: Inside Llewyn Davis ($101,353)

That's only the half of it. Box Office Mojo has the other half.

    1. True dat. If I lived in the States, I'd certainly have seen Out of the Furnace over the weekend. And no, it's not out in the UK yet, but as soon as it is, I'll have a review up.
