REVIEW - SHORT TERM 12


A touching low-key drama, if its touch is generally pretty light. Destin Cretton's film posits itself initially as an ensemble piece, which it ostensibly is, but its route through the deeper recesses of the damaged minds of specific characters within that ensemble becomes less broad as it progresses, yet no narrower. A full portrait of said minds is painted, and the setting, the measured tone of the screenplay and the respectful performances keep melodrama at bay. And this is why so light a touch is necessary when the filmmaker's aim is to realistically depict reality. Never let truth get in the way of a good story, and Cretton lets both truth and a good story have their ways in Short Term 12. With sensitive performances from its young cast providing a generous pitch for his screenplay, Cretton hones in, ever inward, creating a film defined by its emotional geography rather than its physical, and the restricted range of sensory storytelling is what has been reaped in this exchange. A basic sound mix does yield one ironic result, in the amplified atmospheric noise in a particular, hushed nocturnal scene intensifying the sense of space, and for once placing the action in a more palpable physical context. Dignified work from the actors abounds, with each and all resisting the latent theatrics in any film concerned with such affective matters. First among equals is Keith Stanfield as Marcus, whose brief rap sequence is an acute jolt to the heart within the film, whereupon its heretofore easygoing nature is interrupted by a bristling, searing, sharp energy in Stanfield's heartfelt prose and steadfast gaze. His touch is suddenly, superbly anything but light.

  1. So how do you rate Larson's chances after having seen it? There's always someone from the younger group who makes the final cut in Best Actress category. Page '08, Mulligan'10, Lawrence '11, Mara '12, Wallis '13. Am not entirely buying the so-so perfect five - Streep, Blanchett, Thompson, Dench, Bullock(who are virtually in everybody's top 5 right now). Winslet is nowhere to be heard(hard time believing it, an Oscar race w/o Winslet is damned disbelief which looks more and more likely this year). Adams is still a loose canon after not so rapturous early reception. If she ain't in supporting, it ain't no right with Academy, methinks. And, that leaves us the younger groupies, Larson and Exarchopoulos. How do you see it? Would be bonkers if Exarchopoulos gets in, but we know, its too much to expect from the Academy. Expectations isn't a cool thing with Academy. Would be great if she could gather some major critics' groups awards. So, who knows, Larson shall also be paraded by Critics and more accessibility of the performance may just pull the Winters' bone nod this year?
    And don't think anyone else has the realistic chance to cut-in.

    1. You never know. Things could change dramatically. I remember when everyone thought, pre-season, that Cate Blanchett had the Oscar down for I'm Not There, and then the critics came out in clear favour of Amy Ryan in Gone Baby Gone.

      I do think Brie Larson has a good chance. My feelings on her haven't changed since seeing the film - it's a good and popular perf in a good and popular film.
