Operation Red Wings might have been an enormous failure, but Lone Survivor's nationwide expansion, following an excellent limited opening last weekend, certainly was not. $37.8 million hurtled it into the record books, being the second-highest January opening in US box office history. The only major new release, The Legend of Hercules, couldn't even muster up a quarter of that, and ended up in third behind Frozen, on its seventh weekend! Oscar contenders continued to do good business, with The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle holding strong in the Top 5 (as last weekend's No. 2, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones plummeted to 9), and Saving Mr. Banks easing just 24.6% since last weekend, and Philomena just 4%. August: Osage County made No. 7 in its expansion, and in fewer than 1,000 theatres. But Inside Llewyn Davis could only hold 15th place despite a hefty increase in screen count, and Her 11th place in over 1,700 theatres.
